Everybody has a story.
Some parts of our story are beautiful or heroic, some parts we hope to never talk about again. But regardless, it’s our story that defines us. When we meet someone for the first time, and we want to know them deeper, we don’t stop with giving them our “stats.” No, we spend time together sharing stories, over food and drinks, laughing and crying, as we find places that our stories line up.
In the same way, our church has a story, that probably says more about who we are than our doctrinal statement, website design or musical style.
Here are the basics.
We began meeting as a church in the spring of 2008. Before that, many of us were involved in different small groups together, or knew each other in countless other ways. Most of us are from the Greater Peoria-area, and so this is home for us. When we felt like God was leading us to start Imago Dei, we talked about all kinds of locations, but over time, it become clear to us, that God was calling our church to serve the city.
A couple of years later, and we’ve grown: more people on Sunday mornings, more ways of serving the city. But we’re still a work in progress. We don’t have it all figured out, and, in fact, we’re a little suspicious of answers that are too simple. As you get to know us, ask questions and give us a chance to tell you our stories. In the meantime, we regularly ask people in our church to write a weekly article and you can read some of their stories and musings in the ImagoWEEKLY archives.
