Summer Sletten

Summer SlettenWhere did you grow up?
Sunny Bradenton, Florida.

Where did you go to school?
University of Kentucky with BS in Journalism.

What do you do during the day?
I take care of our babies and manage our life. (Lucy is 4 months old. Lyza Gray is 2.5 years old.) Kevin is my husband. I also am a volunteer Young Life leader for Richwoods High School.

What are you reading?
Charlie’s recommendations. . .haha. . . but true. I also like compelling nonfiction. I like to read stories about real people who do amazing things.

What are you listening to?
We have effectively finetuned our Pandora stations so that we like just about every song that comes on. Pandora is the best. It’s on much of the time in our house. Specific music? Most recently, I bought the Jason Mraz CD. Talk Radio is also my friend in the morning.

What is your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge is to figure out more and more who God made me to be. Sometimes I see glimpses of that person. I realize that will probably take a lifetime. I also find it incredibly challenging to parent two small children without losing my mind in the midst of it.

What is your favorite movie?
I’m not a big movie person. There has to be a serious enticement from a trailer for me to go to one. I would rather be social if I go out on a Friday night.

What are you passionate now that you didn’t consider 3 years ago?
Three years ago I would have walked by a homeless person and thought “get a job” with absolutely no compassion. I might have thought that even a year ago. God, however, has started to do a work in me. Frankly, it kind of scares me because working with the underpriveleged is not at all in my comfort zone.

What was your greatest childhood ambition?
To be a rockette. Oh, and to be an expert woodswoman.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
A Grandmother and a Sommelier.

Who is your greatest inspiration?
Jesus. We are in church leadership. That’s the correct answer, right? Living person? My husband. He constantly inspires and encourages me to do the right thing through his example.

What inspires you?
A simple act of kindness from a friend, perfectly ripe fruit, a high school kid who asks big questions about God.

What is your favorite snack?
m&ms. Trail mix that includes m&ms in it.

What do you love about Imago Dei?
I love hearing the stories of people in our Imago Dei community. I also love being a part of a church that has such an intense interest in looking out for the least of these. I am trying to figure out my place in that more and more.
